Project brief:
HOOK
A new heroine challenges the status quo at the court of the Tudors.
WHO are we targeting?
Female skewed, but the quality of performance, slick production values, intrigue and sexually charged drama are enough encourage co-viewing. This is for the same viewers who enjoy The Tudors, Wolf Hall even Game of Thrones – sexy, historical dramas based on British History
WHAT do we want to communicate?
Following on from the preceding series: The White Queen and The White Princess, this is another stellar cast that tackle one of the most popular periods in British history with the unique skew that the scheming, politicking and plays for power and skewed in favour of the female perspective.
The beautiful, teenage Spanish princess, Catherine of Aragon travels to England, to meet her husband by proxy, Arthur, Prince of Wales, heir apparent of Henry VII of England, to whom she has been betrothed since she was a child. Unwelcome by some, she and her diverse court, including her lady-in-waiting Lina, who is of Moorish ancestry, struggle to adapt to English customs. Catherine is horrified to learn that Arthur's younger brother, the arrogant Henry, Duke of York, is the author of the romantic correspondence she has received. When Arthur dies suddenly, her destiny as the one who will bring peace between Spain and England seems in doubt, until she sets her sights on Henry. Can Catherine complete her mission to bring peace between two great nations and how powerful can she become?
The promo should feel young, dynamic and full of passion. Lust filled romping, juxtaposed with bloody battle scenes, grand coronations, plotting, knowing looks exchanged between the key players, moments of anger, aggression and rage!
WHY are we doing it?
This is a top class British drama, set to the backdrop of one of the Greatest conflicts in European History. The Tudors has been a consistent favourite on the channel, and this series in both style and subject matter bares many similarities. And for a channel with a heavily skewing female viewership, this presentation of the period from a female perspective will be particularly appealing.
