Project brief:
HOOK
The science and the stakes when epic engineering fails.
WHO are we targeting?
Male skewed 18 – 49 year olds. They’ll be gripped by stories of engineering oversights that could and most of the time do lead to spectacular acts of destruction. They’ll revel in the oversights, ineptitude, stupidity and sometimes insanity of some of these engineering mistakes, and get great enjoyment when the proverbial poo hits the fan.
WHAT do we want to communicate?
A new series. More Massive Engineering Mistakes from around the globe.
What brought one of America’s busiest intersections to its knees and why have the acoustics in Sydney Opera House always been so problematic? We also travel to Italy, first to Genoa to explore the collapse of the Polcervera Bridge and then to Naples, to examine if local geology was to blame for a massive sinkhole in a hospital car park.
With access to design teams, eyewitnesses, and a panel of experts, we analyse what went wrong with each building blunder, investigate why they went undiscovered and reveal just how engineers are trying to fix them today. Visual recreations, expert talking heads and knowledge from local people add insight, expertise and give a human touch to the program, but this is ultimately a ‘shock-show’, so focusing on the bridge bucking, the dam bursting or a structure falling and crushing all that lays beneath it is the real draw. It features mainly American based projects, but there are several European mistakes, which are worth featuring for local appeal.
WHY are we doing it?
These are educational, insightful shows about engineering, which is a core subject for the channel, all presented in the guise of a “shock doc”, which captures and retells stories of incredible oversight and negligence. The first 3 seasons series were very well received, and this season is even bigger in scope – bigger structures, bigger errors and across more countries.
