Project brief:
HOOK
A tight-knit international team battles to complete Australia's biggest ever tunnelling project beneath spectacular Sydney Harbour.
WHO are we targeting?
Our viewers who love our engineering programming. This is for the same viewers who love Building Giants and Massive Engineering Mistakes. They’re drawn in by the breadth and scale of the engineering feat and will remain engaged by the continuing challenges faced by the team of likable, highly skilled but ultimately relatable everymen who are fighting against a ticking clock to complete the largest transport project in Australian History.
WHAT do we want to communicate?
Sydney, Australia. A beautiful, cosmopolitan city, visited by countless people the world over every year. Home to the legendary Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach. But it’s also home to a massive population of motorists, that’s growing at a rate of 100,000 per year. This centrally focused city is becoming a commuter’s nightmare, with traffic gridlock and pollution a constant and growing problem. A solution was needed – and that is what we present you. Big Machines, Massive Infrastructure, Mega Metro. This series traces the enormous engineering challenges faced by the greatest public transport infrastructure project in Australia’s history. Filmed over five years and at a cost of 50 billion dollars, Mega Metro follows the planning and execution of the longest railway tunnels ever built in Australia, including beneath the busy Central Station and iconic Sydney Harbour, as well as an elevated sky train that stretches into the suburbs. Every day is a new challenge with this elected group of highly skilled, but likable characters as they attempt to achieve something historic and complete this massive undertaking against the clock.
WHY are we doing it?
Huge architectural and engineering feats are what Explore viewers love to see. We’ve had big success this year with other titles looking at the construction of massive buildings and structures (Building Giants) and this show traces and explores the biggest ever transport infrastructure project in the history of the continent of Oceania. Our audiences like the scale of the project in size and the humungous nature of the challenge.
